RefWorks

Find out all you need to know about getting up and running with RefWorks, the UofT licensed citation management software.  Learn how to import citations from the library catalogue, article databases, Google Scholar, and the web into RefWorks and how to use Write-N-Cite to insert in-text citations and create bibliographies for your papers.

Research Rescue

Having trouble finding the books you want in the catalogue?  Not sure which article databases to use or how to search them?  Want to find "high quality" peer-reviewed articles for your papers quickly and effectively? This 90-minute session will help you with your research problems in time to prepare for term papers.

Finding classroom resources for your practicum (ITE / CTEP)

This 1.5 hour hands-on session will focus on finding the resources in the OISE Library (math manipulatives, science kits, pictures, games, textbooks, children’s literature, and more) that will help you teach effectively during your practicum.  You’ll also have the opportunity to explore databases designed specifically for K-12 students which have been licensed for use in Ontario public schools.

Exploring and Evaluating Online Resources (ITE / CTEP)

One of the greatest challenges faced by today’s K-12 students is learning to effectively search the internet and online resources. This 1.5 hour workshop will introduce you to some of the many online resources that you can use with your students, and will provide you with the tools you need to teach your students to become more effective searchers and evaluators of online information.

Library essentials: Workshop and tour for AQ students

Enrolled in an OISE AQ course this summer?  New to OISE / the University of Toronto? The Library Essentials workshop will provide you with “must know” information about the OISE Library – everything from how to get a library card (a “TCard”), to how to add money to your TCard for printing and photocopying, and how to effectively search the library catalogue and online databases to quickly find the books, articles, and other resources you’ll need to complete your course assignments.  The session will begin with a hands-on session in the OISE computer labs followed by a half hour tour of the OISE Library.

Beyond ERIC: Search strategies for interdisciplinary research topics

You're comfortable searching the ERIC database for articles in the field of education, but aren't sure where to look for articles in related fields:  psychology, sociology, women and gender studies, equity studies, management, and more. This 90-minute workshop is designed to help people with interdisciplinary research topics find the most suitable databases for their research.  Explore article databases in a variety of disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary databases.

Tracking citations and finding theses

Are you interested to see which authors have cited a published article, how one article can lead you to other articles on a topic, and how to track how ideas have evolved in the scholarly literature?  Do you want to be able to find theses, here at the University of Toronto and in the wider world? This 90-minute workshop will discuss article citation tracking in Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar, and outline how to search for theses and dissertations in the library catalogue, in Dissertations & Theses: Full Text, and in T-Space.

The Virtual Library (fall 2012)

The Virtual Library is a seven-week intensive library research course for OISE graduate students.

The shift from paper to electronic information sources has dramatically changed the landscape of academic research, publishing, and scholarly communication. Fast-paced technological innovations shape our research practices as well as the ways we publish and share our work with others inside and outside our fields. This course takes a pragmatic and critical approach to navigating the world of online information.
